The operation is performed under light anaesthesia and takes just over two hours. The first night after surgery is spent at the clinic.
A cooling dressing is applied immediately after the operation and should be used as much as possible while at the clinic. This is to reduce the swelling. The first dressing added during the operation is removed in the morning before you return home and is replaced with a new dressing. This should remain on day and night until the first return visit which is after about a week.
On the first visit after a week, the visible stitches are removed in front of the ears. After two weeks, the remaining stitches behind the ears will be removed.

Do not bend your head for the first week.
Daily showers and hair washing are recommended and should begin the day after surgery. The dressing should then be temporarily removed.
The first week after surgery you should eat soft foods. You must not chew gum. You should be careful about exposing your face to very cold temperatures until the feeling returns. Sensitivity can be impaired for several months but always returns. Exercise and other vigorous strain should be avoided during the first two weeks, which is also an appropriate period of sick leave.
